Viscose

Viscose, also known as rayon, occupies a unique position in consumer goods as a semi-synthetic material derived from natural cellulose. What makes viscose particularly versatile is its ability to mimic the comfort and drape of natural fibers like silk, cotton, and wool while offering greater production control and often lower cost. This material begins as wood pulp or other cellulose sources that undergo chemical processing to extract and reconstitute cellulose fibers into continuous filaments or staple fibers. In consumer products, viscose appears in clothing, home textiles, non-woven applications like wipes and hygiene products, and specialized technical uses. The material’s exceptional absorbency (50% more than cotton), breathability, and luxurious drape make it ideal for lightweight, comfortable fabrics with excellent color vibrancy. Recent innovations address traditional viscose’s environmental challenges through closed-loop processing systems that recover chemicals and reduce water usage, as well as alternative cellulose sources like bamboo and agricultural waste that minimize deforestation concerns. As consumers seek natural comfort with consistent performance, responsibly produced viscose continues to bridge the gap between synthetic functionality and natural fiber aesthetics in everyday textiles.
